Former ORAC chair receives the AOF Merck Outstanding Resident of the Year Award
Daniel A. Clearfield, D.O., a CORE resident graduate, received the American Osteopathic Foundation’s “Merck Outstanding Resident of the Year Award” for 2010. He was one of four residents to win the prestigious award, for which the recipients also receive $5,000.Clearfield recently completed his family medicine residency at Doctors Hospital in Columbus, and is now has started an osteopathic primary care sports medicine fellowship at Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J.
Dr. Clearfield is the former chairman of CORE’s Ohio Osteopathic Residency Advisory Committee. According to the AOF citation, he was also involved with many different local, state and national professional organizations.

As a resident within the CORE, Dr. Clearfield was regarded as the “go-to guy” for not only osteopathic manipulative medicine treatments and consults, but for learning new OMM techniques and implementation of projects.
In addition to his residency, Clearfield found time to volunteer within the community. Whether he was providing sports medicine event coverage or hosting sports physicals for local schools in Ohio’s underserved communities, he was never too busy to help out, according to the award citation.
Clearfield received the award at the American Osteopathic Foundation’s “Honors 2010” celebration at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, in conjunction with the American Osteopathic Association’s 2010 Unified Osteopathic Medical Conference and Exposition in October.
At the same event, Jay H. Shubrook, D.O. ('96), F.C.O.F.P., F.A.A.F.P., associate professor of family medicine, TAKE ACTION program directorand director of clinical research, received from the AOA the Pfizer "Fit for life" award, which encourages the promotion of active aging and total health and wellness. The American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) presented this award of $10,000 to Shubrook for his work in creating the summer fitness program TAKE ACTION that teaches children and parents healthy lifestyle choices.
