CORE Welcomes Third-year Students at Annual Dinner

(Athens, OH – 7/17/09) The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Class of 2011 received their official welcome to clinical rotations Thursday, July 16, at the annual CORE Welcome Dinner.

The 107 students met assistant deans and administrators from various CORE sites at Ohio University’s Baker University Center for a meal, followed by the Student Clinicians Ceremony.

The event keynote speaker was Deborah Blackwell, D.O., vice president of medical education at Doctors Hospital/OhioHealth in Columbus.

In her speech, Blackwell compared the clinical rotations at CORE sites to that of participating in the CBS reality program “Survivor.”

“It’s all about teamwork,” she said. “If you don’t meet the challenge, you will be chided by your partners.”

Blackwell told the students that it is important for them to set high goals for themselves during their rotations.

Also at the dinner, the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards were presented by officers of the Class of 2011. Current third-year students nominated residents from various CORE sites, and members of the second-year class selected the winners.

Awardees include:

  • Daniel Clearfield, D.O., Doctors Hospital/OhioHealth
  • Erica Oleson, D.O. (’06), Firelands Regional Medical Center
  • Adrian Polite, D.O., Doctors Hospital/OhioHealth

The Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards are sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation to honor residents who exhibit particularly strong teaching skills and are role models for compassionate, relationship-centered care. The awards are chosen by the medical students whom the residents teach.

Class president Tejal Patel, OMS III, told her classmates that the traditional white coats given to third-year students would arrive during the next few weeks for distribution at the respective CORE sites. Patel and the other class officers then presented a scavenger hunt for a missing lunch box, an activity that highlighted some of their classmates’ most memorable moments over the past two years.

The dinner concluded with the students once again reciting the “Student Pledge of Commitment,” an oath they pledged two years ago during their Convocation and White Coat Ceremony as first-year students. Dean Jack Brose, D.O., told the students to take what they have learned over the past two years and apply it to the next two years. “Make your college proud,” he said.

The 2011 CORE site representatives include:

  • Affinity Medical Center -- Brenton McCoy
  • Firelands Regional Medical Center -- Lindsay Wardle
