OOA/CORE 2012 Research Competition call for abstracts

The abstract deadline is January 31, 2012 for the OOA/CORE 2012 Regional Osteopathic Poster Exhibition and Competition, which will take place at the Ohio Osteopathic Symposium.

The poster exhibition is open to students, interns, residents, faculty, medical administrators and practicing physicians who wish to present posters on clinical/biomedical research, case reports or health policy/educational issues. Participants must present their own poster.

The poster competition is restricted to student, intern, and resident projects and must be either clinical/biomedical research or case reports.

• Submit abstracts to Karen Collins at collink3@ohio.edu.
• OOA Convention: April 19 to April 21, 2012, Hilton Columbus Easton Town Center.
• Poster judging: April 21 at 7:30 a.m.
  
  

Guidelines and Required Elements

Bio-Medical and Clinical Research

These elements should be considered in the judging process:

5 elements are content-related, 1 element is based on oral communication skills, and the last element deals with the poster’s overall visual presentation.

I. Content:

• Title and Author(s)
  • The title should summarize the work and stimulate the viewer to read the poster.  Names of the principal investigator and all co-authors should be indicated, along with respective affiliations.
• Introduction
  • The introduction should clearly state the purpose and objectives of the project and should describe how it builds on existing work.
• Methodology
  • Methodology consists of a brief description of the target sample, including sample size and demographics if relevant, as well as the general design of the study (retrospective chart review, experimental design, survey-based design, qualitative research, etc.) and statistical analysis.
• Results
  • Results must be clearly presented and appropriately summarized.  Tables, charts, graphs, and other visuals are encouraged.
• Conclusion
  • Conclusions must be based on study results and should emphasize the significance and implications of the study.

II. Oral Elements:

• Communication
  • Participants will be expected to respond to questions and to be able to explain their projects clearly.

III. Visual Elements:

• Overall Visual Appeal
  • Consider the poster’s organization, clarity, visibility, and attractiveness of design.

Guidelines and Required Elements

Single Case Study

These elements should be considered in the judging process:

5 elements are content-related, 1 element is based on oral communication skills, and the last element deals with the poster’s overall visual presentation.

I. Content:

• Title and Author(s)
• The title should summarize the work and stimulate the viewer to read the poster. Names of the principal investigator and all co-authors should be indicated, along with respective affiliations.
• Introduction
• The introduction should briefly and clearly introduce the clinical presentation being discussed.  It should provide some general information about and/or characteristics of the clinical presentation. 
• Case Description
• The case description should describe the specific case being presented.  It should provide information and those test and lab results relevant to an understanding of the progression of the case – relevant positive and pertinent negative results; it should offer normal levels for unusual tests.  It should present information in chronological order.
• Discussion
• The discussion should document the unique value of the case, drawing from the literature to justify the clinical value of the single case study being presented.  It should provide some comparison of the presented case with a “normal” clinical presentation or document the rare nature of the presented case.
• Conclusion
• Conclusions (if included) should be directed toward identifying the clinical value of the single case study and should offer recommendations on the detection or care of similar cases.
